🔍 Key Concepts

• Maritime Safety Information (MSI) includes navigational warnings, meteorological warnings, and other urgent safety messages for ships at sea. • Difference between a broadcast service that pushes safety messages to all ships in an area vs. a system that collects voluntary reports or is mainly for commercial / voice communications. • How satellite-based MSI fits into the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) alongside coastal radio and NAVTEX.

💭 Think About

• Which option is specifically designed to automatically broadcast safety-related messages (navigational and meteorological warnings) to all ships in a defined sea area via satellite? • Which of these systems is part of the GMDSS MSI broadcast infrastructure, and which are instead for ship reporting or local MF broadcasts? • Look at the names: which one clearly indicates a satellite service intended for data/safety broadcasting rather than voice calls or voluntary reporting?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which choice is an Inmarsat satellite data broadcast service used within GMDSS for MSI. • Distinguish ship-reporting systems (like AMVER) from MSI broadcast systems. • Remember that NAVTEX is MF (medium-frequency) coast-station based, not a satellite service.
