Q

While underway, how frequently is the DSC controller required to be tested?

🔍 Key Concepts

• GMDSS equipment testing requirements for vessels at sea • Difference between routine performance checks and formal tests • Where DSC controller test intervals are specified in SOLAS or ITU guidance

💭 Think About

• Think about how critical a DSC controller is for distress alerting and how often the system should be proven functional while underway • Compare this testing interval with how often other key GMDSS items (like batteries and radios) are checked • Ask yourself whether the exam is likely referring to an everyday operational check or a less frequent maintenance-type test

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify the exact regulation or guidance that states the test interval for DSC controllers • Confirm whether the requirement applies specifically while underway, not in port or at installation • Make sure you are not confusing log entry requirements with physical test frequency
