Studying at Sea: Offline Practice and Chat Genie

Most study apps quietly assume you have a connection. Ours does not, because a lot of the people using it are somewhere with no bars at all.

Offline-first is not a feature, it is the default

Your question bank and your progress live on the device. You can run a full practice test in the middle of a crossing, in a steel accommodation block, or on a plane, and nothing degrades.

When you get a connection back, your progress syncs. Start a session on your phone during a watch, finish it on a laptop ashore. Same account, same place in the same session.

What this means in practice:

• Download once, study anywhere.
• No spinner, no "check your connection", no lost answers.
• Study on as many of your own devices as you like.

Chat Genie

Chat Genie is the study assistant built into the app. The point of it is the question you have right now, not a generic explanation.

Things worth asking it:

• "Explain this question." Get the reasoning, not just the letter.
• "Which FCC rule applies?" Understand where the answer comes from.
• "Give me a hint." For when you want a nudge, not the answer.
• "Show me similar questions." Drill the concept, not the wording.

Keep answers short and specific. "Why is C wrong?" gets you further than "tell me about GMDSS".

A realistic study loop

1. Run a practice test cold. Do not study first — you want an honest baseline.
2. Work the questions you missed, and use Chat Genie on the ones where you guessed correctly. Those are the dangerous ones.
3. Re-test a few days later.

The gap between "I recognise this question" and "I understand this question" is where exams are lost. Chat Genie is there to close it.

The caveat

Chat Genie is an AI study assistant. It is not a licensed radio officer and it is not the FCC. It is good at explaining the exam material — but for anything operational or regulatory, go to the current rules.
